In recent years, there has been an increased global drive towards reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere and one of the ways is through designing and constructing buildings in a more energy and resource-efficient manner. Buildings are one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions. It is increasingly important that the buildings we design are environmentally sensitive which, as a consequence, results in buildings that are financially economic to operate.
The Green Building Council of South Africa
The GBCSA, under the auspices of the World Green Building Council, was mandated with developing a sustainable building rating tool that is appropriate to the South African environment. The Green Star tool was developed to encourage and reward the adoption of design and construction practices that reduce resource consumption in buildings, reduce waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions attributed to the construction as well as the operation of buildings. An improved indoor environmental quality for the building occupants is also an important aspect of green building.
